Imagine a dark, lonely city. Buildings loom high overhead, the street is lit only by the dull glow of a few street lamps, most of them flickering in and out of the dark. Walking along at a steady pace, a large figure approaches, clad in an overcoat, a single plume of smoke creeping up and around the hat which shadows his eyes from view.
Such was the inspiration for one of the two-part pieces from my latest little foray. I'm fascinated by the aesthetic of the 1930s and 40s, and especially the film noir which came to popularity in the late 40s, continuing for the next several decades. The sense of coolness that I get from the stereotypical detective is great, reminiscent of the tough guy persona which exemplified the era.
So, more work in Illustrator, although of a relatively simple variety. Just tried to get that feel of light and shadow across, the same kind of feel you get from the old black and white movies of the early 1900s.
